They walked through the Statehouse doors as students. They walked out as potential leaders in their community.
That sums up my hopes and dreams when I hosted the annual Kenley Leadership Conference.
A total of 23 senior class and student body presidents from my district attended the conference on state and local government.
I was so proud of this group, their enthusiasm was contagious, and gave me great faith in Indiana's future generation of leaders. These students have clearly demonstrated leadership skills necessary not only for their own success and well-being, but for their community's as well.
Then, the students focused on what it takes to become a leader through several educational sessions held in the Indiana Senate Chambers. Students heard from legislators about their responsibilities, what a typical day of a session is like and key issues facing lawmakers during the upcoming session. Small group discussions followed, where students debated the most serious problems facing Indiana.
I think we'll be in good hands as the reins of leadership are passed on to this next generation, this conference should contribute to their readiness.”
