Zabawa, lovingly referred to as "Mr. Z" by his students, is retiring this spring after more than 30 years in the Anderson Community School Corporation. He teaches English during the day, then serves as coach for the chess clubs at both Anderson High School and South Side Middle School at night.
"Mike Zabawa has been considered the best chess coach in the state by his students, and his record stands as a testament to their recognition," Austin told House members. "The Anderson High School Chess Club won national co- championships in 1992 and 2000, and the clubs at both schools have been ranked in the Top Ten nationally more than half the time since 1987."
In addition to his work as a coach, Zabawa is the former vice-president of the Indiana State Chess Association and served as the site coordinator and one of the chief tournament directors at the Scholastic Chess of Indiana Individual State Finals in 2003.
"Chess is not just a game to determine whether one player is more intelligent than another," Austin said. "Instead, it's a game about learning. Players learn opening moves, mid-game strategies and end-game procedures.
"The lessons Mike Zabawa's students learn while playing chess will help to mold these young people into productive adults," she continued. "From his accomplishments, it is plain to see that Mike Zabawa is far more than an English teacher and a chess coach to his students.
"Instead, Mike Zabawa is one of those rare teachers who has the ability to inspire students and show them how to reach their full potential and use their talents in everything to do," Austin concluded.
Zabawa was joined by several students and their parents, past and present, who spoke on his behalf.
Zabawa was presented with $2,000 in donations raised in the community to support the team's trip to the National High School and Middle School Chess Finals later this spring. The team is still soliciting donations in support of their participation. Donations may be sent to: South Side Middle School, c/o Chess Club, 101 W. 29th Street, Anderson, IN 46016.
