A HOUSE RESOLUTION urging the Legislative Council
to assign to the Health Finance Commission the topic of
prohibiting children under 14 years of age from using a tanning
salon.
Whereas, tanning beds expose people to ultraviolet
radiation; and
Whereas, the World Health Organization recently stated
that ultraviolet radiation is carcinogenic to humans and placed
ultraviolet radiation in their highest risk category, along with
cigarettes, arsenic and mustard gas; and
Whereas, the National Cancer Institute has reported a 50%
increase in the number of melanoma cases among women age
15 and 39 since 1980; and
Whereas, the American Cancer Society has stated that in 2009 over 68,000 people were diagnosed with melanoma and that melanoma will kill one person every 62 minutes; Therefore
SECTION 1. That the Legislative Council is urged to
assign to the Health Finance Commission established under IC
2-5-23 the topic of prohibiting children under 14 years of age
from using a tanning salon.
SECTION 2. That the committee shall operate under the
direction of the Legislative Council, and that the commission
shall issue a final report on this topic when directed to do so by
the council.
