SENATE RESOLUTION

     MADAM PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION honoring the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean on its 150th anniversary.

    Whereas, the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean was founded in 1857 by a small group of German-speaking immigrants. The congregation built a white frame church on the west side of what is now State Road 129, and hired a pastor;

    Whereas, in the beginning, worship and instruction were offered only in German, and each member was required to contribute firewood for the pastor and church. It was during this time that the congregation grew quite large;

    Whereas, the second fifty years at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean were marked by a great deal of change. The congregation rapidly became more "American," converted to using English, organized a choir and started holding Sunday School by the time of World War I;

    Whereas, more recently, women have been integrated into the ranks of leadership, an education building was

constructed, and the church successfully merged with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and

    Whereas, the congregation of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean remains faithful to the Lord through changing times. The church is a pillar of the community and its 150th anniversary is worthy of recognition: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. The Indiana State Senate honors the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean on its 150th anniversary.
    SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Marcus Felde, Pastor of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Olean.
