HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION



        A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the town of Newburgh on the 200th anniversary of its founding.

    Whereas, Last year marked a special occasion for the citizens of the small southwestern town of Newburgh;

    Whereas, Newburgh celebrated the 200th anniversary of its founding in 2003;

    Whereas, This quaint town, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located along the banks of the Ohio River east of Evansville;

    Whereas, Newburgh, which was first settled in 1803, is one of the oldest communities in southwestern Indiana;

    Whereas, Starting in the 1850s and continuing for the next 30 years, Newburgh was the largest river port between Cincinnati and New Orleans;

    Whereas, During this period, boats arrived and departed daily, warehouses lined the riverbank, steamboats brought goods to this busy Ohio River port, and settlers traded their produce for life's necessities;

    Whereas, While Newburg is no longer the bustling city of the 1850s, it still offers an exceptional quality of life to its citizens and visitors;

    Whereas, This scenic town offers opportunities to go on

historic walking tours, learn about Civil War history, browse the riverfront walkway, and enjoy its many parks, festivals, antique shops, dining facilities, and unique specialty shops;

    Whereas, The citizens of Newburgh, Indiana, will join with their sister city of Newburgh, England, in celebrating that city's 900th anniversary; and

    Whereas, Indiana's history is made up of small towns like Newburgh; the citizens of Indiana should remember fondly the many contributions communities like Newburgh have made to the development of our state: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates the citizens of Newburgh on the 200th anniversary of Newburgh's founding.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the town council of Newburgh.
