SENATE RESOLUTION

MR. PRESIDENT:

    I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A RESOLUTION urging the establishment of an interim study committee on identity theft.

    Whereas, Identity theft is defined as the stealing of one's personal data such as Social Security number, date of birth, or mother's maiden name and using the data to establish credit, run up debts, or take over existing financial accounts fraudulently;

    Whereas, Much of this data can be found in government information that is made available to the public;

    Whereas, Identity theft has become a serious problem in recent years;

    Whereas, Local government officials and law enforcement officers must focus on the creation and enforcement of laws that will greatly reduce the number of identity theft crimes in Indiana; and

    Whereas, It would behoove the state of Indiana to study the problem of identity theft and to establish some guidelines to follow in the future: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the legislative council is urged to establish a committee to study identity theft through the use of private information contained in public or other documents held by government entities.
    SECTION 2. That the committee, if established, shall operate under the direction of the legislative council and that the committee shall issue a final report when directed to do so by the council.
