A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the sesquicentennial of Brookston, Indiana.

Whereas, Brookston, Indiana, located in White County near the center of Prairie Township on the old New Albany and Salem Railroad line, is celebrating its 150th birthday this year;

Whereas, Brookston, which was laid out and platted by Benjamin Gonzales, Isaac Reynolds, and Joel McFarland on April 26, 1853, was named in honor of James Brooks, the president of the New Albany and Salem Railroad;

Whereas, Royal Hazelton, the first settler, arrived in Brookston in 1829 and set up a one room cabin a mile southeast of the future site of the town;

Whereas, Brookston, nicknamed "The Little Wonder City" by Howard T. Brockway, erected its first school, the Brookston Academy, in 1867;

Whereas, By the second half of the twentieth century, Brookston had changed from an agricultural town to a bedroom community but kept strong ties with its agricultural heritage;

Whereas, Brookston will mark the beginning of its sesquicentennial celebration on April 26, 2003, and will continue to celebrate with events scheduled throughout the year;

Whereas, Brookston provides a wide range of activities and organizations for its residents, including the Lion's Club, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Frontier Boosters, the PTO, Dollars for Scholars, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs, 4-H clubs, and two home economics clubs;

Whereas, There are three large churches, Methodist, Federated, and Church of Christ, to meet the spiritual needs of the community, and the town is governed by a five member town council; and

Whereas, Brookston is a wonderful community in which to raise a family: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives concurring:

SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes Brookston, Indiana, on the occasion of its sesquicentennial celebration and recognizes the value small towns like Brookston have in creating an atmosphere that is beneficial to the citizens of Indiana.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to Joseph E. Butz, president of the Brookston Town Council.
