A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Herman B.
Wells, the much beloved educational visionary who helped transform
Indiana University, Bloomington, into an internationally recognized
center of research and scholarship.
Whereas, Mr. Wells, age 97, died quietly at his home in
Bloomington, Indiana, on March 18, 2000;
Whereas, Mr. Wells was born and spent his childhood years in
Jamestown, Indiana, before moving to Lebanon, Indiana, where he
graduated in the top 10 percent of his high school class;
Whereas, Mr. Wells attended the University of Illinois for one
year before transferring to Indiana University (IU) in 1921 where he
earned a degree in business administration and participated in a
number of campus activities including membership in the IU band
and leadership of Sigma Nu fraternity;
Whereas, in 1927, Mr. Wells was awarded a Master of Arts
degree in Economics, and in 1935 was appointed Professor of
Economics at IU, which led to what would become a lifelong career
in academia;
Whereas, Mr. Wells' long and distinguished career at IU includes the following positions: Dean at the IU School of Business Administration, Professor of Business Administration; Chairman of the Board for the IU Student Foundation; Acting President of IU;
and President and Chancellor of IU, Bloomington;
Whereas, Mr. Wells brought European influence to southern
Indiana by attracting scholars such as Noble Prize-winner, Hermann
J. Muller; landmark geneticist, Tracy M. Sonneborn; and pioneer in
heart surgery, Dr. Harris B. Shumacker Jr.;
Whereas, Mr. Wells has received numerous accolades and
awards during his lifetime, including: appointment to the Carnegie
Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, named one of
"America's Ten Outstanding Young Men of 1939" by the U.S. Junior
Chamber of Commerce, awarded the Excellence in Education
Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sons of the American
Revolution, appointed six times as a Sagamore of the Wabash
designee by six Hoosier governors, and many, many others; and
Whereas, according to current IU President, Myles Brand,
"Among other things, Mr. Wells passed on to his successors a first-
class faculty, a world-renowned School of Music, outstanding
international programs, and a steadfast commitment to research
excellence and academic freedom": Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the General Assembly hereby expresses its great
sadness over the loss of a wonderful man who dedicated the
majority of his life to academia at Indiana University in
Bloomington, Indiana.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the Senate transmit five copies of this resolution to IU President, Myles Brand, and three copies to IU President of the Board of Trustees, John Walda.
