HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION



    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Richard L. Johnson, Sr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Johnson Oil Company for receiving the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for retail.

    Whereas, Dick Johnson received his Degree in Business Management from Indiana University in 1955;

    Whereas, Dick borrowed $10,000 from his father in 1957 and started a small gasoline and heating oil distribution business;

    Whereas, Dick's company started with three employees, including himself, personally driving the company delivery truck;

    Whereas, in 1980 the company consisted of 30 stations, and the convenience stores soon started to become popular;

    Whereas, Mr. Johnson's company operates about 170 Bigfoot gas stations/convenience stores in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, with reported sales in 1999 having been $416 million;

    Whereas, in the past 20 years, Dick's stores have grown from 10 percent to 40 percent of Johnson Oil Company's sales;


    Whereas, Richard, who is now the Chairman of the Columbus Front Door Committee used his personal resources to create the Front Door Project;

    Whereas, Dick has donated $1 million to the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which is part of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University;

    Whereas, Dick resides with his wife Ruth in Columbus and has a daughter, Jenny, and a son Rick, who joined the company in 1984 and rose through the ranks to become President of Johnson Oil Co. in 2000;

    Whereas, Dick has shown himself to be a true visionary with a pulse on what the consumer wants in the service area;

    Whereas, Dick is a testament to the adage that hard work and perseverance will lead to success; and

    Whereas, Dick is a true community leader who also serves as a shining example to young entrepreneurs; Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates Richard L. Johnson, Sr. for his success in the private sector and for being a shining example of entrepreneurship in the Columbus community.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the Indiana House of Representatives is directed to transmit two copies of this resolution to Representative David Yount.
