SENATE RESOLUTION

     MR. PRESIDENT:

        I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

    A SENATE RESOLUTION recognizing and honoring State Senator Cleo Washington for his outstanding tenure of service to the people of Indiana, the Indiana State Senate, and the Indiana General Assembly.

     Whereas, Cleo Washington was elected State Senator in 1996, to represent Senate District 10 which includes most of South Bend and a portion of Mishawaka, in St. Joseph County;

    Whereas, Senator Washington has served his constituents for four years with great devotion, including serving on the following Senate Standing Committees:
    Corrections, Criminal and Civil Procedures;
    Ethics;
    Judiciary, Ranking Minority Member; and
    Planning and Economic Development;

    Whereas, Senator Cleo Washington's other devoted activities on behalf of the people of Indiana have included serving on the Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving and the State Enterprise Zone Board;

    Whereas, Senator Cleo Washington was co-sponsor of the first State Conference on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) program, enacted by the Indiana General Assembly in April, 1997. CLEO is a program, which has increased opportunties for minority and economically disadvantaged individuals to become attorneys;
    
    Whereas, Senator Cleo Washington has brought to the halls of the Indiana Senate intellectual vigor, integrity, passion for justice, and distinguished statemanship;



    Whereas, Senator Washington is a member of the following professional organizations: American Bar Association, National Bar Association, Indiana State Bar Association, St. Joseph County Bar Association, Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, American Trial Lawyers Association, and the Volunteer Lawyers Panel for Legal Services;

    Whereas, Senator Cleo Washington was elected to the South Bend City Council in 1991. Senator Washington represented the 2nd District of South Bend for four years and served as Vice President of the South Bend City Council the Chairman of Public Safety Committee, the Chairman of the Committee of the Whole, and as a member of the Police Officers' and Fire fighters' Pension and Disability Fund Advisory Committee;
    
    Whereas, Senator Cleo Washington has served as Indiana's Representative to the following organizations: National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, National Black Caucus of State Legislators, Founding President of Leaders and Positive Role Model Inc., City Council Representative to Urban Enterprise Association, Minority Parenting Task Force, and St Joseph County Local Coordinating Council for the Governor's Commission for a Drug Free Indiana. Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly

of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives concurring:

    SECTION 1. That on behalf of the people of the State of Indiana, we hereby extend our sincere appreciation to Senator Cleo Washington for his dedicated service for the people, the Indiana Senate and the Indiana General Assembly.
