RESOLUTION



    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Charles W. Edwards.

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at the age of 76;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was born October 12, 1922, in Ridgeville, Indiana, the son of Joseph and Helen (Baker) Edwards;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1942, earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University in 1948, and graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in 1954;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards served in the Army during World War II and the Korean War and was a recipient of the Bronze Star;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was active in the political arena for many years, representing Owen, Parke, and Putnam counties in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1961 to 1965, and acting as the House Republican Majority Leader in 1963;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards served as the chairman of the Owen County Republican Party and was a state delegate to the Republican Convention;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was also very active in the

legal community, serving as the president of the Indiana State Bar Association from 1980 to 1981, the president of the Owen County Bar Association from 1960 to 1998, and the president of the Tri-County Bar Association in 1961;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was very aware of the needs of his community and felt it was his duty to help fulfill these needs;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was the charter president of the Owen County Chamber of Commerce, a charter president of the Jaycees, president of Spencer Lions Club, a 50-year member of the Spencer Masonic Lodge, Owen County Preservation Society, and Owen County Habitat for Humanity;

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash by three different governors and was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel; and

    Whereas, Charles W. Edwards was a great man who served his state, his country, and his community admirably, while still devoting time to his family and friends. He will be missed: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives wishes to express its heartfelt sympathy to the family of Charles W. Edwards _ his wife of 48 years, Carolyn (Keiser) Edwards; his daughters, Chriss and Kathy; his son, Ric; and their families.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this Resolution to the family of Charles W. Edwards.
