HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION



    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Last National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Indianapolis, Indiana.


    Whereas, The 50th Anniversary of the Last National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, (held in Indianapolis on August 28, 1949), the 118th Annual Encampment of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the 113th Annual Encampment of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the 112th Annual Encampment of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic will be celebrated in Indianapolis on August 19 through August 22, 1999;

    Whereas, These patriotic groups include members dedicated to perpetuating the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic and the brave patriots who fought successfully to preserve the Union;

    Whereas, These Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic throughout our nation promote patriotism, the observance of national holidays such as Memorial Day, and the care and upkeep of Civil War memorials;


    Whereas, The members of these organizations value our nation's heritage, the ideals on which our nation was founded, the American principles of liberty, justice, and domestic tranquility as stated in the Constitution of the United States, and by their efforts remind the public of the activities that promote these values and ideals;

    Whereas, The Allied Orders, composed of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, Woman's Relief Corps, and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861 to 1865, encourage the people of today to learn more about our past and ways to commit themselves to the principles that made our country and its people strong; and

    Whereas, We, who have inherited the nation that the members of the Grand Army of the Republic valiantly and successfully fought to preserve, have just cause to celebrate the activities of the distinguished Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic and say "Thank You" for their continuing work to keep the memory of the Union's veterans alive and well: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly grants its highest accolade to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic as they meet for their 118th, 113th and 112th encampments, respectively.
    SECTION 2. That the Indiana General Assembly congratulates Commander-in-Chief Andrew M. Johnson, National President Mrs. Betty J. Baker, and National President Ms. Jenny Vertrees for their leadership of their respective organizations.
    SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives is directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the 118th Annual Encampment of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the 113th Annual Encampment of the Auxiliary to the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the 112th Annual Encampment of the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, Commander-in-Chief Andrew M. Johnson, National President Mrs. Betty J. Baker, National President Ms. Jenny Vertrees, and Edward J. Krieser, Chairman of the National Encampment Committee.
