Yearly. The long session is held in odd numbered years and must end by April 29. The short session is held in even numbered years and must end by March 14.
The Constitution of 1816 permitted an annual meeting of the General Assembly from December until March. The Constitution of 1851 stated that instead of meeting annually the General Assembly would only convene a session every two years. During the 1970s an amendment was passed that allowed the General Assembly to meet annually.
Being a member of the Indiana General Assembly is not a full time job. Indiana's General Assembly is known as a citizens' assembly meaning that the members have other full time jobs.
The House of Representatives has 100 members, each representing one district within the state. The Senate has 50 members, one representing each district.
Each member of the House of Representative is elected every two years. Senators are elected for a term of four years with one half of the Senators being elected biennially.
The Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore are elected by the members of their own chamber.
The Lieutenant Governor is the President of the Senate and presides over the daily action in that chamber. The Lieutenant Governor does not vote unless it is necessary to break a tie.
