What happens after you’ve walked across the stage and accepted your diploma? Ideally, you already have a job lined up. Follow these tips to help land the job you want.

Know what you want.

Some students study a subject they like and worry about a job later. Don’t get caught at graduation with nowhere to go. Make sure your degree will be marketable for your chosen career path, and make sure you have a career path in mind. Talk to your professors, advisor and professionals in your field to make sure your interests and skills match up with your educational path.

Be career-ready.

Employers look at your major and grades, but they also want to see “soft skills” on your résumé—things like dependability and good communication skills. Read about preparing for your career while in college to see if you’re on the right track.

Find the job.

Although internet job searches can be great, the best way to increase your chances of getting hired is having a personal connection. Ask everyone connected to your field if they know of any openings, and don’t forget to ask for a recommendation if you apply. Internships can be a great way to meet professionals with a career you want, and you can also ask your professors and advisor.
