Legal Assistance

This section is intended to help you find an attorney to assist you with your case. We would like to assist you by providing a list of organizations that can either help you with your case themselves and/or direct you to a lawyer or organization in your county that can help you. This may be provided free or at a low cost to those who qualify; however, free or low-cost legal help is not available in all cases.

Filing or defending a case in court can be very complicated. There are many rules and procedures to follow, and there are differences among the courts in how some things are handled. Also, many cases require specific kinds of immediate action of which a person with little or no legal training may be unaware. Timely legal advice can stop small problems from becoming larger ones.

There are many ways you can find someone to help you. For example, you can find an attorney by talking to a friend or family member or by looking in the yellow pages under "lawyers" or "attorneys." You can also try contacting the organizations below.

Indiana State Bar Association
You can find general Indiana attorney information and local bar association contact information.

American Bar Association: Indiana Pro Bono Directory
The American Bar Association has posted a directory of local programs that provide free and/or low cost legal assistance to those who qualify. The directory lists programs by county.

American Bar Association: Find Legal Help
The ABA has also created a web site to help people find legal help from a lawyer or other source.

Indiana Justice Center
This agency provides support to the legal service programs in Indiana receiving funds from the Legal Services Corporation. These programs, like Indiana Legal Services, Inc., provide free legal assistance to low income people throughout Indiana. You can find a list of these programs by county.

Indiana Pro Bono Commission
This site is dedicated to promoting opportunities for attorneys to provide free legal representation to persons of limited means. You can find reports, lists, and other information about pro bono work by attorneys in Indiana.

Lawyer Referral Services

County Law Libraries
Many county law libraries maintain lists of local groups that provide free or low-cost legal help. Contact your local public library.

Law Schools
Many law schools offer clinical programs that provide free or low-cost legal help to those who qualify. In a typical clinical program, a law student working under the supervision of an attorney will assist you.
