In 2006, the Indiana General Assembly adopted reentry court legislation under IC 33-23-14, which awarded the Indiana Judicial Center oversight and support of reentry courts established under the statute. Reentry courts provide offenders released from the Department of Correction access to comprehensive, wrap-around services for a minimum of one year to promote their successful reintegration into the community. Like the drug court statute, the reentry court statute permits the Judicial Conference Board of Directors to adopt rules for reentry courts and requires reentry courts established under the chapter to be certified by the Indiana Judicical Center.
In June 2007, the Judicial Conference Board of Directors adopted interim rules for reentry courts. The Problem-Solving Courts Committee is in the process of developing final rules and certification procedures for reentry courts establisghed under IC 33-23-14. It is anticipated that the committee will present final rules to the board for its consideration in 2008. If adopted, the IJC will begin certification reviews of reentry courts in late 2008. There are currently three operational reentry courts and two reentry courts in the planning stages.
