Project Overview
The State of Indiana currently has 386 trial courts, approximately 300 of which serve the state's 92 counties. The remaining courts serve smaller units of government: cities, towns, or townships. Although the types of cases these courts handle varies, meticulous records are kept in every case filed in every such court. These records are reflected in the courts' “docket” of each case, officially called the “chronological case summary” or “CCS.”

A large majority of Indiana courts maintain their dockets on all of their cases using a computer program called a “case management system” or “CMS.”

Current Activities and Next Steps

Work underway on Odyssey Phase II courts; free public access site very popular

The Odyssey Case Management System went live in nine Circuit Courts in Monroe County and Washington Township Small Claims Court in Marion County in December 2007.

Now, work has begun to deploy Odyssey to the next set of courts from mid-2008 through early 2009. When Phase II counties are all using Odyssey, approximately 20% of all court cases in Indiana will be in the statewide case management system.

Potential Phase II counties are clustered in several regions around the state. JTAC will work to make Odyssey available to all courts in the following counties:

On April 22, 2008 information was distributed to Phase II Counties regarding anticipated project expenses, such as internet connectivity and desktop equipment, and provided expected sources of funding, i.e. local or State funded.

Thousands Taking Advantage of Free Public Access

Public information on cases logged into Odyssey is available at no charge via the Supreme Court’s website (www.courts.in.gov).

During March 2008, more than 5,500 unique visitors used the website, viewing more than 216,000 pages. The convenience of the web-based access is evident by the number of users viewing documents 24 hours a day. While there were an average of 24,000 page hits between 3-4 p.m., there were also 860 hits between 3-4 a.m.

More functionality added
On March 17, 2008 additional Odyssey functions were deployed, including:

• Streamlining how entries are made so court reporters don’t have to type the same information twice
• Implementing an improved system to notify attorneys of cancelled hearings
• More financial tracking abilities
