International Prosecution of War Crimes, Genocide, & Crimes Against Humanity

The Indiana Supreme Court will hold a free CLE event, “International Prosecution of War Crimes, Genocide, & Crimes Against Humanity,” on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 3:00 - 4:30 pm.

This is a free CLE event sponsored by the Indiana Supreme Court Legal History Lecture Series with support from the Indiana Commission for Continuing Legal Education. It has been assigned course number #0110761 for 1.5 hours.  Registration will be completed at the door.

About the Event

What are the differences between and among war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity?  What bodies of international and domestic law apply during civil war, international armed conflict, and/or peace time? What are the trial and appellate procedures in international criminal tribunals? Who chooses (and trains) those tribunals' prosecutors, defense counsel and judges?  Learn the answers to these questions and more at the next CLE program organized by the Indiana Supreme Court's Legal History Lecture Series.

Our speakers have recent and direct experience with this topic.  Judge Vaidik, Indiana Court of Appeals, has recently returned from teaching a 7-day seminar in Arusha, Tanzania to UN prosecutors who are prosecuting genocide and crimes against humanity in Congo, Sudan, Rwanda, and the former Yugoslavia. Professor Edwards, IU School of Law—Indianapolis, has worked on a variety of international cases including for the defense on the cases against Slobodan Milosevic, the detainees at Guantanamo Bay, and Omar Khadr.

The speakers will answer questions following the presentations.

Speakers

Judge Nancy Vaidik was appointed to the Indiana Court of Appeals by Governor Frank O’Bannon on January 19, 2000.  Previously, she was a trial court judge for Porter County, the chief deputy prosecutor for Porter County Prosecutor’s Office, and worked in private practice.  She is committed to legal education through her work as an adjunct professor of law at Indiana University School of Law—Bloomington and the various seminars through many organizations, such as the Indiana Judicial Center and the Indiana Continuing Legal Education Foundation (ICLEF).
