Overview

The Indiana Supreme Court, Indiana Judicial Center, and Division of State Court Administration partnered with Ivy Tech Community College to develop a workplace Spanish curriculum for court employees. The curriculum will be presented through 24 hours of classroom instruction. The course textbook will contain basic information needed by court employees to effectively communicate information to Spanish-speaking individuals. Along with the textbook, participants will receive a CD-ROM to assist in maintaining the skills learned in this course. Additional materials to enhance participant's learning will be distributed by the instructors. A range of topics are covered in this course including: greetings and introductions; dates and times; numbers; telephone reception phrases; eliciting personal information; providing directions to other offices; explaining courtroom procedures; referencing court documents; and much more.

This course is designed to provide basic means of communication and will not result in someone being fluent in the entire Spanish language.

Course Eligibility

Trial courts of record.  This course is open to any employee in the State of Indiana who directly reports to a judicial officer of a trial court of record or employees of the Clerk’s office assigned to work with the courts (i.e. judicial officers, probation officers and staff, court staff, certified court alcohol and drug program staff, court clerks).

City and town courts.  Judges and certain court staff working for a city or town court are also eligible for this course.  Please contact Michelle C. Goodman, Indiana Judicial Center, before submitting an enrollment form to Ivy Tech Community College.

The tuition and book expenses for authorized participants from trial courts or city and town courts are being paid by the Indiana Judicial Center and Division of State Court Administration. 

Other criminal justice entities/personnel.  Employees of non-probation based community corrections programs, attorneys, prosecutors offices, public defender offices may participate in this course on a self-pay basis.  Please note on your enrollment letter to Ivy Tech that you are required to pay for this course.

Registration Information

Registration is coordinated by the Ivy Tech Community College locations listed below. To register, contact the Ivy Tech representative in your area to obtain the course schedule. 

If you are eligible under the trial courts of record or city and town court categories, send the Ivy Tech representative an official letter of authorization from a judicial officer of the court of record.  The format for the authorization letter is provided below.  (Please note for city and town court personnel, you must contact Michelle C. Goodman, Indiana Judicial Center, before submitting this enrollment letter.)

If you are eligible under the self-pay category, send the Ivy Tech representative an official letter on agency letterhead noting you wish to enroll in the WorkPlace Spanish® Training for the Indiana Judicial System and that you are obligated to pay for the tuition and book expenses.
