Traveling Oral Arguments
In addition to hearing oral argument at the State House in Indianapolis, the Court of Appeals hears several oral arguments each year at locations around the state to enable Hoosiers to learn about the judicial branch. The Court has traveled to hear oral arguments around the state for many years. For instance, 2007 marked the 25th consecutive year the Court heard oral argument at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Vigo County and the 20th straight year of hearing cases at Vincennes University in Knox County.
The practice of hearing oral argument around the state expanded significantly at the time of the Court's centennial in 2001. That year, as part of its centennial celebration, the Court held oral arguments in every part of the state and decided to continue the practice every year.
Sites for ‘traveling oral arguments' are often Indiana's four law schools, colleges and universities, high schools, or county courthouses. The Court has also heard oral argument in hotels as part of legal conferences, at a hospital, at tourist sites, and in retirement communities.
Following oral argument, members of the Court and the attorneys stay to answer questions about the Indiana judicial process from audience members.
