Did you know?
Natural gas leaks
Natural gas is one of the cleanest and safest energy sources available, but leaks can occur in rare instances. As a safety measure, it is injected with a distinct odor to alert you to the presence of a gas leak. The smell is often compared to that of rotten eggs. That way if there is a gas leak, it will be sure to get your attention.
Know the warning signs for gas leaks:
-
You notice an odor that smells like rotten eggs.
- Pilot or burner flames are reaching abnormal heights.
- Unusual noises are coming from your gas-powered equipment or appliances.
If you detect any of these signs, leave your home at once.
- DO NOT attempt to find the leak yourself.
- DO NOT turn on electrical switches.
- DO NOT use the telephone. This includes cellular phones and all types of portable communication and electronic devices that have a battery. These can spark and create a source of ignition.
- Leave immediately, go to a nearby phone and call your local gas utility company or 911.
