KOKOMO, Ind. – The Kokomo (Ind.) City Council on Monday night adopted – by a margin of 6-3 – a smoke free air ordinance.
The ban applies to all public places and workplaces, including restaurants, and takes effect in 30 days. Kokomo is the 26th municipality in Indiana to adopt a smoke-free air ordinance. In Indiana, more than a third of the Hoosier population is now protected by smoke free ordinances compared to just three percent in 2000.
The measure is expected to be signed into law as early as today.
Editor’s Note: Karla Sneegas, executive director of Indiana Tobacco Prevention Cessation (ITPC) is available for interviews to discuss the Kokomo ordinance, its expected impact, as well as the latest on smoke-free air laws in Central Indiana. * * *
ITPC was created to oversee funding from Indiana’s share of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement from the tobacco industry. The Board oversees the state’s tobacco prevention campaign, which includes media components, special youth features, enforcement, cessation initiatives and community programs.
