Editor's Note: Karla Sneegas, executive director of Indiana Tobacco Prevention Cessation (ITPC) is available for interviews to discuss the Greensburg ordinance, its expected impact, as well as the latest on smoke free air laws in Central Indiana.
GREENSBURG, Ind. – The Greensburg (Ind.) City Council on Monday night adopted a smoke free air ordinance, a move that effectively bans smoking in all public places including the town's restaurants, factories and private clubs.
With its passage, Greensburg becomes the 25th municipality in Indiana to adopt a smoke-free air ordinance. In Indiana, more than a third of the Hoosier population is now protected by smoke free ordinances compared to just three percent in 2000.
"In addition to achieving a milestone as the 25th Hoosier community to adopt a smoke free ordinance…we're especially pleased with the fact that this ordinance assures a smoke free environment for thousands of workers,” says Karla Sneegas, executive director, Indiana Tobacco Prevention Cessation.
ITPC was created to oversee funding from Indiana's share of the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement from the tobacco industry. The Board oversees the state's tobacco prevention campaign, which includes media components, special youth features, enforcement, cessation initiatives and community programs.
