Rides, Treats, No Smoking at 4-H Fair

By Paige Harden

Fair-goers can look forward to the same thrilling rides and tasty treats as in years past - but for the first time in a smoke-free environment.

Fair officials are asking patrons to keep the smoke in the parking lot.

"It's important to make the youth see that smoking is not an acceptable habit and that secondhand smoke is a danger, it's about the message," said Peggy Voelz, coordinator of tobacco-prevention programs for Bartholomew County. "It's about having fun with clean air."

Kids Day has been smoke-free at the fair for the past four years, and Voelz said she felt the timing was right to ban smoking entirely.

"We were the first county fair in the state to have a smoke-free Kids Day," Voelz said. "We've always had a positive response with that and since the ordinance passed we felt this was the right time."

Larry Fisher, fair board president, said visitors may smoke only in the parking lots.

BBQ

Also new to the fair this year is a barbeque contest open to the public.

Starting at 11 a.m. July 14, contestants must follow 4-H rules, but will not compete against 4-H'ers.

Participants must barbeque rabbit, chicken, pork, lamb or beef.
