SCHERERVILLE - People play bingo in the gym at St. Michael Catholic School now without a pall of smoke over their heads.
Said to be the first smoke-free bingo hall in Northwest Indiana, St. Mike's has lost some regular players since mid-February, when players were told they had to step outside if they wanted to light up.
Rob Guetzloff, the bingo co-chairman, said the game's school setting, as well as health concerns about secondhand smoke, led to the decision.
The "smoke eaters" installed in the gym couldn't clean the air enough after the Monday bingo nights.
