Circumstances: Jason Janek was reported to have been at the Bar Rio located in Whiting, Indiana on the evening of May 23, 2004, and into the morning of May 24, 2004. Abul-Husn may have also been at this establishment during this time. On May 24, 2004, Janek was reported missing to law enforcement by family members. In the early morning of May 25, 2004, police in East Chicago, Indiana observed Janek's truck. Upon trying to stop the vehicle, a pursuit ensued and the vehicle was lost. A short time afterwards the vehicle was located abandoned. Upon looking through the vehicle, the bodies of Janek and his friend, Abul-Husn were discovered in the bed of the pickup. The two men had been beaten and each shot in the head.
