The division is responsible for the safe movement of all SuperLoads requiring an escort on Indiana highways.
A SuperLoad is defined as any vehicle (plus its load), which exceeds the following weights and dimensions:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is responsible for issuing permits for vehicles exceeding the above listed size limitations and weighing 200,000 pounds or more. These vehicles may require a state police escort if there are bridge slowdowns.
The Indiana Department of Revenue (IDOR) is responsible for issuing permits for vehicles exceeding the size limitations listed above and weigh less than 200,000 pounds. These vehicles may require a police escort depending on road conditions in the local INDOT sub-district.
Those loads requiring an escort may only be moved Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:30 pm, unless it is deemed an emergency movement and such movement is approved by INDOT, or IDOR. (A company declaring a load movement to be an emergency must realize that this is for life and death situations only.)
