Educational Events

Home School Tour - September 21
Learn about Indiana's own Levi and Catherine Coffin and their amazing contributions to the Underground Railroad in Fountain City, Indiana.  Hear about the dangers facing freedom-seekers and the critical role played by other conductors and African-American communities.  Participate in a special activity and receive lesson plans about the Underground Railroad in Indiana.  This is ideal for third-grade students and older; there is a nominal charge of $2 per student/person.

For more information on school programs and Indiana Academic Standards met at the Levi Coffin Home State Historic Site, click here.  Educators may also contact Anne Fairchild, Eastern Region education coordinator at afairchild@dnr.in.gov.

Approximately 2,000 fugitive slaves were sheltered at Levi Coffin’s home in Newport (Fountain City) between 1827 and 1847.
