steele_roadtoschleissheim.jpgT.C. Steele (1847 – 1926)

In 1880, T.C. Steele went to Munich, Germany, to study at the Royal Academy.  This dark interior is typical of the palette taught at that time.  The composition, however, features several light sources that create varied shadows and shapes.  The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites are fortunate to possess many paintings from Steele’s Munich period, bequeathed by his second wife, Selma.

Find out about the T.C. Steele State Historic Site.

Post offices around the country send more than one million pieces of mail each Christmas to Santa Claus, Ind., to be stamped with the town’s postmark.
