"Willows and Weeds"

dudley_willowweed.jpgFrank V. Dudley (1868 – 1957)

The painting "Willows and Weeds" is a depiction of the shrub zone of the dunes.  The title most likely refers to a weeping willow tree in the background, although some identify it as an ash or black willow.  The graceful curves of the dark tree trunks, contrasting with the opalescent background, form a strong composition on Dudley’s typically square canvas.

Frank Dudley, who lived in the Indiana dunes and advocated for their preservation for more than forty years, took great pride in the accuracy of the flora and other natural qualities in his paintings.  He studied the dunes in changing seasons at different times of the day to achieve his plein air (outdoor painting) truthfulness.

The school bus stop sign that flaps open from the driver’s side of the bus was developed in 1932 by Earl M. Hicks of Lebanon, Indiana.
