The Wabash and Salamonie Rivers, and beginning in the 1840s, the Wabash & Erie Canal, made this area a trading center for Native Americans and early settlers who displaced them in the mid-19th century. Miami Chief Richardville moved the Miami capital from Kekionga near Ft. Wayne to a site at the Forks of the Wabash in 1831.
