Elkhart County

(The Elkhart River)

More than 200 firms make mobile homes, campers and other recreational vehicle-related products in Elkhart County. A center for musical instrument manufacturing, Elkhart County has earned the title of the “band instrument capital of the world.” A counterpoint to the industrial and commercial activity is the large Amish community whose members live and farm in the surrounding countryside.

The first library in the Northwest Territory was established in Madison, Ind., in 1811.
