DeKalb County

Dekalb.jpgEst. 1837
(Baron Johann de Kalb)

Although 80 percent of the county’s land is used for farming, the city of Auburn once was a major center of the nation's automobile industry. More than 21 models of cars were created there, including the classic Auburn and the elegant Cord.

Approximately 2,000 fugitive slaves were sheltered at Levi Coffin’s home in Newport (Fountain City) between 1827 and 1847.
