Webmaster

Job Description:

The Webmaster is responsible for electronic media used in marketing and communications for the IndianaStateMuseum and Historic Sites. Incumbent works collaboratively with museum staff to identify appropriate uses of electronic media and oversees the development and delivery of effective messages. 

 

Incumbent will be responsible for contributing measurable results to support public awareness and Museum and Historic Site visitation through the development, implementation and maintenance of its electronic communications program.  Incumbent must analyze software requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and costs restraints.  Will consult with Information Technology Team members to evaluate interface between hardware and software and operational and performance requirements of overall system. Must predict and measure outcome and consequences of program design and implementation.

 

Incumbent has direct control and responsibility for electronic communications activities of the IndianaStateMuseum, subject to the review and approval of the Director of Marketing and Communications.  The incumbent has the responsibility to ensure that the electronic communications are developed with the institution’s marketing objectives in mind.

 

The incumbent interacts with the museum’s management team and works collaboratively with peers in other departments. Incumbent develops and implements plans in conjunction with colleagues in the Marketing and Communications Department.  Incumbent must deal effectively with board members, volunteers, government officials and elected officials, as well as with donors, members and museum constituents in general. 

 

Work is performed in a multi-level complex with potential travel to other Museum and Historic Site facilities.  Evening or weekend work may be necessary to meet deadlines or solve specific and critical problems.  Work requires long periods of time in front of computer terminals typing on a keyboard and incumbent is susceptible to eyestrain and back, hand and wrist discomfort.  Incumbent may be required to crawl under desk, stoop, bend and stand on ladders for short periods of time in order to run cabling and other wiring for equipment hook-up or disconnections.  Must be able to lift equipment with or without assistance that weighs up to and exceeding 25 pounds.

 

Incumbent reports directly to the Vice-President of Marketing and Communications.  Works closely with and sometimes coordinates the work of other Information Technology Team members in order to complete special projects associated with electronic communications.       

 

Responsibilities:

·        Maintains a sound knowledge of the mission, vision and core values of the museum and historic sites. 

·        Researches, designs and develops the Museum’s Web site.  Develops new page templates or components determining page outputs at code level, in line with agreed design framework and agreed technical standards for new web content.

·        Designs, codes, and tests technical solutions.

·        Assists in physical and logical database design.

·        Identifies system deficiencies and recommends solutions to Museum and/or DNR IT Directors.

·        Writes effective procedures.

·        Works with Marketing Graphic Designer to ensure graphics, images, photographs, videos, and other media are prepared for the web site.

·        Coordinates within the Marketing and Communications Department and collaborates with other museum staff to identify appropriate uses of electronic media to reach target audiences ensuring content and graphics are appropriate for electronic media.

·        Manages and maintains the museum Web site including writing copy, updating and adding Web pages, responding to e-mail received through the Web site and resolving technical problems with IT consultants.

·        Plans, prepares and tests electronic communications systems.

·        Develops and distributes e-newsletters to internal and external audiences.

·        Provides support for print graphic design, desktop publishing and Power Point presentations.

·        Stays abreast of developments in electronic commerce that may be adapted for use to reach museum customers.

·        Continually monitors the development of electronic communications technology to expand on-line offerings and improve management of electronic communications.

·        Negotiates and manages contracts with vendors.

·        May assist in and coordinating installation and maintenance of software.

·        May serve on the Museum and Historic Sites Information Technology Team.

·        Performs related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

·          Knowledge and skills typically acquired through bachelors and masters’ degrees in marketing, communications or related field.

·          One to three years experience in an electronic communications position, preferably in a fast-paced and high-volume environment.

·          Understands technical and functional design requirements.

·          Understands advanced relational database concepts.

·          Is proficient with physical and logical database design.

·          Has experience with at least one relational database management system.
