Preface

As required by IC 20-34-4-6, all schools in Indiana are required to self-report immunization coverage levels of their kindergarten, first grade, and sixth grade students to the immunization program at the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) on an annual basis.  The data from the 2005-2006 school immunization assessment is summarized in this report.

Highlights

  • A total of 1,846 schools (86.1%) reported data on 265,906 kindergarten, first grade, and sixth grade students enrolled in schools across Indiana.

  • Ninety-two percent of public schools and seventy-four percent of private schools reported immunization data for the 2005-2006 school year.

  • Ninety-one percent of schools reporting completed the necessary immunizations according to state requirements, a four percent decrease from the previous year.

Recommendations and Conclusions

  • Schools reporting immunization data to the Indiana State Department of Health need to ensure accurate statistics are submitted and should validate report results prior to submission.

  • Schools who experienced low coverage levels should make strong efforts to improve their rates.  If you need support to increase your rates, please contact your local health department or Immunization Field Representative.

  • Schools need to remain abreast of the school requirements for the 2006-2007 school year.  School immunization requirements can be accessed through the Indiana State Department of Health Immunization Program website at: http://www.in.gov/isdh/programs/immunization/SchoolRequirements/index_school_req.htm.
