Preface

As required by IC 20-8.1-7-11, all schools in Indiana are required to self-report immunization coverage levels of their kindergarten, first grade, and sixth grade to the immunization program at the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) on an annual basis. In the 2004-2005 assessment year, the requirements for schools with kindergarten and first grade students had to submit data on proof of vaccination or of disease for varicella. The data from the 2004 - 2005 school immunization assessment is summarized in this report.

Highlights

  • A total of 1842 schools (84.5%) reported data on 251,243 kindergarten, first grade, and sixth grade students enrolled in schools across Indiana.

  • Ninety-four percent of public schools and 65 percent of private schools report immunization data for the 2004-2005 school year.

  • Ninety-five percent of schools reporting completed the immunizations necessary according to state requirements, a one percent increase from the previous assessment year

Recommendations and Conclusions

  • Schools who submitted immunization reports to the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) are applauded for their efforts to improve the overall immunization coverage rates to 95 percent. These schools should continue their efforts to improve the health status of their students.

  • Schools who experienced low coverage levels should make strong efforts to improve their rates. If you need support to increase your rates, please contact your local health department or immunization field representative.

  • The number of schools not submitting immunization reports to ISDH increased again in the 2004-2005 assessment year. As stated in IC 20 8.1-7-11, all schools must submit immunization status of their students to ISDH on a yearly basis.

  • Schools need to remain abreast of the school requirements for the 2005-2006 school year. Beginning in the 2004-2005 school year, varicella vaccine or proof of disease was required for kindergarten and first grade students. School immunization requirements can be accessed through the Indiana State Department of Health Immunization Program website (http://www.in.gov/isdh/programs/immunization)
