As required by 470 IAC 3-4.1-12, all licensed child care centers
in Indiana must submit immunization reports to the Indiana State Department of
Health (ISDH) on an annual basis. The data from the 2000-2001 Daycare facility
immunization assessment is summarized in this report. The intent of providing
this information is to allow each facility to compare its coverage levels to
county and state coverage levels. Although assessments are required only once
per year, it is of utmost importance that upon enrollment, each facility inform
parents as to which vaccines are required and give them a reasonable time frame
for bringing their child(ren) “up-to-date.” The data, listed on the current
web page (pending), is alphabetized by county, with state totals found at the
bottom of each page. The following key is offered to explain the abbreviations
which are used:
Abbreviation | Explanation |
---|---|
Enr |
Number of children enrolled |
Comp |
Number of children who have completed their immunizations according to State requirements |
% |
Percent of enrolled children completing their immunization requirements according to State requirements |
Data is presented for each age range for which reporting is
required: 15-23 months of age, 2 – 4 years of age, 5 – 6 years of age, and 7
years of age and older. In order to reduce the risk of vaccine preventable
disease, every effort should be made by child care centers to ensure that all
enrolled children are up-to-date for their required vaccinations. To be
considered complete, a child must have age-appropriately received vaccines for
diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and Haemophilus
influenzae type b. Although immunizations against varicella (chicken pox) and
hepatitis b are not required for enrollment in child care facilities in Indiana,
coverage levels for these vaccines were reported and are shown in the
Immunization Summary Report.
A total of 481 Daycare facilities reported data on 36,215 children enrolled in their facilities.
Of the daycare facilities in Indiana that reported immunization data, 208 (43 %) facilities reported overall completion levels greater than 90% for their enrollees.
Seventy-five percent of children enrolled in daycare facilities in Indiana have completed their immunizations according to State requirements, a drop from previous years (table 1).

Daycare facilities and Local Health Departments should carefully review this data to identify facilities reporting less than 90% of 2 year old children who are up-to-date.
Daycare facilities with low coverage levels should make every effort to improve. Contact your local health department or immunization field representative if you need assistance.
Facilities who have attained 90% coverage or greater are to be congratulated on their efforts and are encouraged to maintain their attention on this important aspect of preventive health care.
Data in this report was collected from 481 daycare facilities throughout Indiana and compiled by the Indiana State Department of Health’s Immunization Program.
