Hepatitis B Vaccine Requirements

Hepatitis B is a serious disease of the liver caused by a virus. Approximately eight percent of the more than 80,000 new cases of hepatitis B that occur each year in the United States are adolescents. There is, however, a very safe and effective vaccine to protect teenagers against hepatitis B.

Indiana Code 20-34-4-7 states, "Each student who enters grade 9 or grade 12 shall be immunized against hepatitis B. However, a student may not be prevented from enrolling in, attending, or graduating from high school for the sole reason that the student has not been immunized under this section". This law became effective July 1, 2005 and is in effect until July 1, 2008. This age group was not covered by the 1999 state legislation that requires kindergarten and first grade students to be immunized against hepatitis B.

State health officials report that the 1999 hepatitis B vaccine requirement resulted in a major decrease in hepatitis B infections in persons under age 20 in Indiana.

Please contact ISDH at 1-800-701-0704 or cbriley@isdh.IN.gov regarding this vaccine requirement. Click here for contact information for school corporations http://www.doe.state.in.us/
