Vital Records > Register a Birth > Register a Home Birth Register a Home Birth

Home births are registered with the local health department in the jurisdiction of birth until the child reaches 12 months.

To register a home birth within 12 months at the local health department, documentation will be required. Evidence is commonly requested for proof of residence within the county or jurisdiction where the birth is being registered; however, other documentary evidence may be required depending on the health department.

Please contact the local health department where the child will be registered to obtain more information about documentary evidence necessary for registration, and other requirements. Contact information for local health departments may be found on the Local Health Department Contacts page.

Once the child is age 12 months or older, the birth must be registered as a delay at the Indiana State Department of Health. For more information about registering a birth for a child 12 months or older, please see the Register a Delayed Birth Certificate page.
