Environmental Public Health Home > Vector Control Section > Collection and Testing of Dead Birds Collection and Testing of Dead Birds

Once again, we would like all dead crows, blue jays, and raptors (e.g. hawks) to be sent to us for testing for West Nile Virus. These are the only species which we are accepting because:

  1. They are very likely to die as a result of WNV infection.
  2. Our laboratory has the capacity to run only a certain number of birds. Testing every dead bird, regardless of species, from throughout the state would quickly overwhelm the capacity of the laboratory.

A revised copy of the Dead Bird Submission Form for 2004 along with detailed instructions regarding collection and shipment of the birds to the ISDH laboratory is available in PDF.
