The Indiana State Department of Health Chronic Respiratory Disease Section (CRDS) works with several agencies and organizations in order to reduce the burden of asthma in Indiana.
In partnership with the Indiana DOE, CRDS conducts several trainings for school nurses each year. The trainings cover asthma basics, asthma medications, and how to handle an asthm emergency at school. For more information on these trainings, please visit our Schools and Childcare page.
The 5-Star Environmental Recognition Program for Child Care Facilities, a program created by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), ensures that child care providers have taken steps to reduce and eliminate hazards that can cause permanent, long term developmental problems in young children. The Chronic Respiratory Disease Section works closely with IDEM to promote environmentally healthy child care and ensure that effective asthma management is a part of the 5-Star recognition process.

The Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission (TPCC) became part of the State Health Department in 2011. Since then, TPCC and CRDS have worked to integrate tobacco reduction and protection from secondhand smoke exposure into asthma care.
CRDS provides funding for the Asthma Call-Back Program at Parkview Health. This program provides a series of phone calls by an asthma health educator to check on an individual's health status. The program also provides home visits as needed to help reduce asthma triggers in the home, and assists individuals in receiving asthma medications at a reduced cost.
CRDS provides funding for an asthma management program at St. Mary's Health System. This program works to reduce emergency department visits and hospitalizations for people with asthma.
