What is INJAC?

The Indiana Joint Asthma Coalition (InJAC) is a voluntary network of people and organizations who work to reduce the burden of asthma on people living in Indiana. The InJAC includes volunteer members from federal, state, and local governmental agencies, professional organizations, managed care plans, hospitals, schools, environmental groups, and other community-based organizations and individuals concerned with the prevention and control of asthma in Indiana.

The Coalition includes an Executive Committee and five workgroups, which are coordinated by chairpersons. The coalition’s five workgroups focus on particular aspects of asthma which are data and surveillance, health care providers, public education, children and youth, and environmental quality.

When does InJAC meet?

The coalition meets quarterly. The meeting schedule for 2008 is as follows:

Thursday, June 19, 2008  1:30 p.m. 
Wednesday, Sept 17, 2008  9:00 a.m. 
Thursday, Dec 11, 2008  1:30 p.m. 

All meetings will take place in the 8th floor conference room at the Indiana State Department of Health (2 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis, IN, 46204).

Workgroup Activities, Publications, & Discussions

Data Collection and Surveillance - focuses on the development and implementation of a comprehensive asthma surveillance program

Public Education - focuses on increasing public awareness of asthma as a serious chronic disease and on improving the knowledge and skills of patients regarding the detection, treatment, and control of asthma, particularly among high-risk populations.

Asthma Awareness Campaign – Localized versions of the Environmental Protection Agency and Ad Council’s ‘Fish Out of Water’ media campaign and print materials developed by InJAC to raise asthma awareness and help prevent asthma attacks.

Indiana Asthma Resource Guide - connects Hoosiers with resources to learn more about asthma and the asthma services available in the community.

Children and Youth - focuses on asthma activities related to schools and early care settings.

School Personnel Knowledge, Behaviors, and Policies Related to Asthma
This report provides results from a survey of Indiana school administrators, teachers, and school health care staff and their asthma knowledge and school policies related to asthma. Suggestions for asthma training programs for school staff are provided based on survey findings.

Asthma Knowledge and Policies of Child Care Providers
This report provides results from a survey of Indiana Child Care Providers and their knowledge and policies related to asthma. Existing strengths and needs are discussed to aid in development of asthma trainings for child care providers.

Environmental Quality - focuses on identifying environmental hazards and work-related risk factors that contribute to asthma and to determine remedies that address specific settings, such as homes, commercial buildings, early care settings, schools and the workplace.
