ISDH Home > Health Care Quality & Regulatory > Acute Care/Hospitals > Abortion Clinic Licensing Program Abortion Clinic Licensing Program

Program Overview

A freestanding entity that performs surgical abortion procedures must be licensed as an abortion clinic. Such an entity does not include a hospital that is licensed as a hospital, an ambulatory surgery center that is licensed as an ambulatory surgery center, or a physician’s office as long as the surgical procedures performed at the physician’s office are not primarily surgical abortion procedures.

The ISDH monitors the health care quality of abortion clinics through the licensure process.  Abortion clinics are licensed for one year.  ISDH surveyors visit centers bi-annually for licensure inspections, or more often if complaints are filed about a center.
