Hospital-based: Hospital-based lactation consultants offer assistance to breastfeeding mothers-and baby dyads when they are in the hospital, and many are available by phone after the mother has left the hospital. Some provide consultation at the hospital after hospital discharge. Hospital-based lactation consultants provide service and counseling only to patients at that particular hospital.

Lactation Consultants Services once mother and baby are home: Lactation consultants help with breastfeeding problems that occur after the mother has left the hospital and is at home. Some lactation consultants provide home visits. Others have an office where they see clients. These specialists offer assistance for complicated situations requiring personal consultation such as low milk supply, baby who is having difficulty latching onto the breast or is sucking incorrectly, sore nipples or breasts, a baby with Down syndrome, twins, a premature baby with a feeding problem, a cleft palate baby, illness of mother or baby, and breastfeeding an adopted baby. There is a fee for the service that may be covered by insurance. Some practitioners have a sliding scale of fees. Most breastfeeding specialists have qualified as International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.
