Biofuels

ISDA is committed to promoting biofuels in the Hoosier state!

Indiana ranks 5th in the nation for corn and soybean production. With 15 ethanol plants and several biodiesel plants, Indiana has the opportunity to produce approximately 1.4 billion gallons of ethanol and 100 million gallons of bio-fuel each year.

Ethanol

Corn-based ethanol is a homegrown, high-octane fuel and better for the environment, contributing up to a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas. Higher blends of fuel also help keep your gas price lower. With 15 ethanol biorefineries in the state and almost half of Indiana-grown corn converted into ethanol, this fuel ingredient is already positively serving Indiana’s economy, environment and local farmers.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel is a clean-burning alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources such as soybean oil, vegetable oils, animal fats and used cooking oil. One gallon of biodiesel reduces carbon dioxide by an average of 74% compared to petroleum diesel. Biodiesel can be mixed with regular diesel and blends up to 20% (called B20) don't require any engine or fuel pump modifications.  Indiana produces more than 100 million gallons of biodiesel annually from soybean oil, which provides positive economic impacts for Indiana farmers and communities.   Biodiesel also burns cleaner and reduces harmful soot from diesel emissions, so all Indiana residents can enjoy cleaner air.
