ISDA Requests Stakeholder Feedback

Indiana Agriculture Stakeholders Information

Nearly three years ago, Governor Mitch Daniels signed HB1008, creating the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA).  Shortly after this signing, the newly created department unveiled Possibilities Unbound: The Plan for 2025, Indiana Agriculture's Strategic Plan.  The plan set into motion a series of initiatives resulting in unprecedented growth in Indiana's agricultural sector along with a significant dialogue about the important role agriculture plays in Indiana's future.

A key part of the strategic plan was a commitment to review the plan at least annually to insure that it adapted to new challenges and opportunities facing Indiana agriculture. Our annual reviews have taken place, and undoubtedly much has changed since 2005 in the world of agriculture.  The explosion of biofuels, the unprecedented increases in commodity prices, and the record level of export sales are just a few.

As a result of these changes, combined with ISDA nearing its third birthday, the department is beginning an in-depth review process of comparing performance against the original plan; analyzing the changes in the global, national, and state agriculture sectors; and making necessary changes to the strategic plan.

ISDA will be conducting in-depth analysis of the state of Indiana agriculture and will also work in close partnership with Purdue University's Agricultural Economics Department, commodity organizations and stakeholders at large for their perspective.  Therefore, the department would like your thoughts; specifically, we would ask that you, your industry, and/or your organization provide concise, written feedback against the five questions that are attached.  Feedback must be received by no later than April 15.

ISDA will use your feedback and the economic analyses to develop recommended changes to Indiana Agriculture's Strategic Plan.  ISDA plans to have its recommendations drafted by no later than the end of 2008.

Please note: This review will focus on the economic and market development opportunities in Indiana agriculture and will not consider the state's ag regulatory structure.  This is because the Ag Regulatory Review Commission, established by Lt. Governor Skillman in 2007, is conducting this analysis and providing recommendations.

Thank you for your partnership in Indiana agriculture and thank you for your feedback.

Sincerely,
