Electronic Data Interface

An Exciting Time Saving Opportunity For Warehousemen That's Here Today!

WHAT IS EDI?

EDI is an acronym for Electronic Data Interface and is the process of moving data from one computer system directly to another. In our case, data is moving in one direction, from the warehouseman's computer to the examiner's computer.

The "blueprint" for this exchange of data is called a "data standard." It is the August 1, 1995, Association of American Warehouse Control Officials (AAWCO) standard which established a common file for state warehouse examinations across all states.

AAWCO is a national organization of grain regulatory personnel including some Canadian providences. Currently Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois have computerized examination programs that are EDI compatible.

WHO BENEFITS FROM EDI?

Everyone!

Grain Buyers & Warehouses:

  • 10% - 30% less time spent by examiner onsite.*
  • Less demand for assistance during examinations.
  • Eliminates several requests for information and print-outs.
  • Reduces confusion of terminology.
  • Less disruptive to your business.

    * Depending on the number of records downloaded, size of the business, time of year, etc.

EDI and the Indiana Grain Buyers & Warehouse Licensing Agency:

  • EDI enables the transfer of the following obligations: unreceipted storage, deferred price contracts, sales contracts, purchase contracts, warehouse receipts, and grain payable/receivable records from the warehouse computer onto a diskette then into the examiners notebook computer for analysis. The eliminates hours of manual data entry, transposition errors, and greatly speeds the examination process.

HOW TO GET STARTED...

    1. You must have a computerized grain accounting system
    2. Your grain accounting software must have EDI compatibility (ask your grain accounting software supplier for this capability You must be able to transfer data to a 3.5" diskette.
    3. When the Indiana examiner arrives, inform him that you would like to use EDI and follow your software vendor's instructions for generating an EDI diskette.

NOTE: There is no direct connection between the examiner and warehouse computers. Warehouse personnel transfer data to a diskette, therefore computer security interests are protected.
