FirstNet and AT&T
To establish the first nationwide public safety broadband network the U.S. Department of Commerce and FirstNet selected AT&T to build, deploy, and maintain the network for 25 years for opt-in states. AT&T, through the FirstNet public-private partnership, will invest significantly in the communications infrastructure that public safety officials rely upon for day-to-day operations and disaster response. To help achieve FirstNet’s mission, AT&T has assembled a team of leading suppliers, including Motorola Solutions, General Dynamics, Sapient Consulting and Inmarsat Government. AT&T’s team for FirstNet will work to begin building out the network and capabilities starting in 2017.
The broad terms of this 25-year agreement between FirstNet and AT&T are:
- FirstNet will provide 20 MHz of high-value, telecommunications spectrum and success-based payments of $6.5 billion over the next five years to support the network buildout;
- AT&T will spend about $40 billion over the life of the contract to build, deploy, operate and maintain the network, with a focus on ensuring robust coverage for public safety;
- Upon a Governor’s Opt-In decision, FirstNet users will have prioritized access to all bands across AT&T’s vast network, valued at more than $180 billion;
- In early 2018, AT&T will deploy a secure, dedicated FirstNet Core network for FirstNet agency users.
