Public Safety Communications technology is developing at a rapid pace, and Indiana is making plans, both short term and long term, to integrate next generation communications technology into existing and future communcations systems.

Short term, the state will upgrade the existing statewide 800 MHz voice communications system to P25 standards. This move will offer many benefits, not the least of which is the ability to purchase radios from multiple manufacturers, thereby ensuring cost competitiveness and more choice in products.

Long term, the state is planning for the National Public Safety Broadband Network (FirstNet), the country's first nationwide broadband network dedicated to public safety.

The Integrated Public Safety Commission recently held a series of regional meetings to provide details about the P25 upgrade process and timeline and also to present details about the National Public Safety Broadband Network (FirstNet).
