More About the Governor's Fitness Award

During the first week, the child chooses the activities he or she will participate in as a fitness program. After an initial attempt, the child will be asked set goals for the next eight weeks. During each of those eight weeks, the child fulfills his or her goals under the supervision of an adult. In addition, the child will learn about nutrition and the dangers of drugs and alcohol. After completion of the challenge, word is sent to the Council via email with an Excel spreadsheet. The Council then awards the student with the Governor’s Fitness Award. As an added bonus, the schools with the highest participation rate each fall will receive a visit by the Indiana Fever fitness clinic. Governor’s Fitness Awards are given year round.

The Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and Sports realizes that many different organizations participate in fitness programs other than the Governor’s Fitness Award. As long as the program meets the qualifications below, participants will be eligible to receive the Governor’s Fitness Award certificate.

  • The goal of the program must be to teach healthy habits and reinforce lessons through daily practice.
    • Exercise: Record daily activity; 2 aerobic, 2 strength, and 1 flexibility exercise
    • Nutrition: Meet USDA guidelines
    • Harmful substances: Sign abstinence pledge
  • The program must last a minimum of 8 weeks and be administered at least once per week.
  • The program may take place during any part of the year.
  • Please submit your program to help@inshape.IN.gov one month prior to its start date. A Governor’s Council staff member will evaluate whether it has met the above criteria.

Overall the program is a simple, yet lasting way to introduce children to healthy lifestyles and to promote their continuation in a fitness program. Currently the program is available to schoolchildren and can be administered by a parent, teacher, coach, or other responsible adult. A version of the Governor’s Fitness Award for senior citizens is under development.
