The Truth About Physical Activity

Did you know that if exercise were a pill it would likely be the most prescribed drug in the country? Why? Because it can help prevent and manage almost every chronic disease condition known to man including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and some forms of cancer. It improves mental abilities, staves off depression, gives us energy, improves sleep patterns, builds muscle and reduces body fat…and there are many more. All in all exercise enables us to do more and live better for longer.

Being inactive is a risk factor for the development of disease and disability. Why? Because our bodies are designed to move and move them we should. Any kind of movement, such as exercise, poses a risk while we are doing it. But regular exercise also lowers our overall risk of developing disease or disability. The benefits, which can be significant, far outweigh the risks, which are relatively minor. If you have a specific medical condition that you think might be aggravated by exercise then talk to your healthcare provider or an exercise specialist.

  • You are never too older to start moving more. Studies show that even adults over 100 years of age benefit greatly from an exercise program.
  • When performed correctly exercise is very safe for individuals of all ages and abilities
  • Exercise doesn't have to be intense and painful to be effective. Even light to moderate forms of exercise provide significant benefit. In fact, if exercise is painful then it needs to be modified.
  • While it is true that weight lifting will increase your muscle mass and strength you will in no way become "huge". As we age the hormonal changes in our bodies make this very unlikely without an extreme amount of exercise.
